Wachovia Supports the Brigade

On December 18th, Wachovia Bank at Monkey Junction presented the Brigade Boys & Girls Club a check for $1,000 as part of its Community Partner grant.  The grant is part of Wachovia’s commitment to building strong and vibrant communities and improving education in their local service areas.  The grant will be used to help maintain the Club’s Project Learn program, which provides support to Club members to help them succeed in school and become lifelong learners.  A special thank you to Matt Collins at Wachovia for his help with this grant!

“Stuff the Backpack” Campaign a Huge Success!

Stuff The BackpackHow do you help get the school year started off right? Supply students with new backpacks and school supplies! This was the mission as the Brigade Boys & Girls Club ran its first annual “Stuff the Backpack” Campaign. Local businesses and individuals sponsored our Club kids by supplying backpacks and buying grade-specific school supplies. The campaign’s original goal was to provide 50 backpacks to our Club kids, but due to the overwhelming response, we were able to provide over 120 backpacks!!

Our most generous donator was Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty, who supplied 76 of the 120 backpacks and also helped stock our POWER HOUR classrooms with extra paper, pencils, markers, rulers, calculators and much, much more! Other community sponsors include Carolina Roofing Specialist, Register’s Auto Glass, Wilmington Police Department, Keller Williams Realty, Berkshire Property Advisors, Pine Valley Church of God and Port City Community Church.

Thanks to everyone for making this campaign a huge success!

Target Fine Arts Program

TargetAs Target’s mission to give back to local communities, the corporation awarded the Brigade Boys & Girls Club a $2,500 grant to provide a Fine Arts Program to its Club members. The Fine Arts program will enable Club members ages 5-18 to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts.

The program, which will start in the fall, will provide classes that will focus on various mediums of art including drawing, painting, mixed media, collage and sculpture. The Club will create an art gallery in which a dedicated space will showcase the member’s art work. Look for the Fine Arts Program classes this fall!

US Cellular supports the Club

Generous Donation from U S CellularOn August 11th, US Cellular showed their continual support to the Brigade Boys & Girls Club by presenting a check for $10,000. The Platinum Sponsorship demonstrates US Cellular’s commitment to the Club’s mission of providing a safe and fun environment for young people to help realize their full potential.

In addition to financial support, volunteers from US Cellular visit the Club every month to participate in the POWER HOUR assistance program.

Breakfast at the Kids Table Raises over $25,000 for the Club

Breakfast At The Kids Table

Over 160 people including members of the community, Board Members, Club staff and Club kids all attended the second annual Breakfast at the Kids Table on August 11th at the Cape Fear Country Club. This hosted table event is designed to educate the community on the Brigade Boys & Girls Club as well as celebrate the accomplishments of the Club members. Twenty-five Club members were hand selected to attend the event based on demonstrating positive qualities such as honesty, respect and good attitude and serve as a great representation of the Brigade Boys & Girls Club.

The event was hosted by two of our Teen Club members, Andre Fullwood and Nadine Brown, whom helped with emcee duties. Our 2009 Youth of the Year, Diana Bracht spoke to the crowd about her personal experiences growing up in the Club and how that influence has helped shape who she is today. A big thanks to Gary Chadwick, Board Member, who also shared a personal testimony about the influence the Club had on him as both a youth and an adult.

A special thank you to DJ Professionals and Video who provided audio/visual services for the breakfast. Finally, thanks to our Board of Directors, Club staff and Club kids who helped make this breakfast a wonderful achievement!
